“This is my song,” I announced, which was unfortunate because it was also someone else’s song and they were already standing beside the machine. We solved this through a system of gestures nobody understood. I went first. The opening notes arrived in a key I had not anticipated, followed by a line I knew only from the chorus. The screen continued to offer words as if it believed in me. By the second verse, three friends were singing backup, one person was filming, and the bartender had quietly lowered the microphone. I finished with a dramatic bow that caused my drink to tip over. The song received applause. The floor received most of the beverage.
